Telecom Minister makes panic button on cellphones mandatory
New Delhi, Apr 26 (IBNS) Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Monday said that no cell phones in India will be sold without a dedicated panic button on them, according to reports.
The new rule will come into effect from Jan 1, 2017.
He also said that cellphones should have in-built GPS, setting Jan 1, 2018 as the deadline for the implementation.
"With effect from January 1, 2017, no mobile phone handset company shall sell in India. Feature phones without the facility of panic button by pressing 'Numeric key - 5' or 'Numeric key - 9' to invoke emergency call," an official notification said.
