Inside the daring US mission to rescue downed airman in Iran amid race against time

After a US F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down by Iran on Friday, one crew member remained stranded deep inside enemy territory for nearly two days.

What followed was a high-stakes race against time as U.S. forces launched a complex rescue operation under constant threat.

Tracking the missing airman

The search began with efforts by the Central Intelligence Agency, which deployed advanced surveillance tools to locate the missing officer.

According to reports, the agency also ran a deception campaign—spreading misinformation that the airman had already been rescued—to confuse adversaries and reduce the risk of capture while the pilot moved through rugged terrain.

Elite forces move in

Once the airman’s location was confirmed, U.S. special operations forces were deployed near the site under cover of darkness.

The mission involved hundreds of personnel and a coordinated aerial assault to secure the extraction zone.

Fighter jets, including A-10 Warthogs and F-35 stealth aircraft, provided air cover, while rescue teams prepared for a rapid pickup amid heavy enemy presence.

Firefight during extraction

As the rescue team moved in, the operation reportedly came under fire, triggering a brief but intense firefight. Despite the resistance, U.S. forces were able to reach the stranded airman and secure him.

Rescue helicopters then rushed into the area, extracting the officer under combat conditions.

At the heart of the mission was the HH-60W “Jolly Green II” helicopter—designed specifically for combat search and rescue.

Equipped with advanced sensors, defensive weapons, and a powerful hoist system, it enabled a fast extraction even in dangerous conditions.

Safe, but not without risk

President Donald Trump later confirmed the success of the operation, declaring, “We got him,” and calling it one of the most daring rescue missions in U.S. history.

The rescued airman, who sustained injuries, has since been flown out and is reported to be safe.
