River Brahmaputra in Assam's Goalpara shows signs of receding
New Delhi, Jul 29 (IBNS): The Ministry of Water Resources informed that River Brahmaputra at Goalpara in Goalpara District of Assam has receded from High Flood Situation to Moderate Flood Situation at 0800hrs on Friday.
At 0800 hrs, it was flowing at a level of 36.92 m with falling trend which is 0.65 m above its Danger Level of 36.27 m and 0.51m below its previous high flood level of 37.43 m recorded on July 31, 1954.
Assam is facing one of its worst flood situation in recent years.
Five people, including a minor girl, were washed away in flood waters in the state on Thursday taking the flood-related death toll to 21.
According to media reports, more than 18 lakh people have been affected. The Army, along with NDRF and SDRF personnel, have been deployed to rescue marooned people in Bongaigaon, Jorhat and Golaghat.
Flood waters have submerged over 80 percent areas in Kaziranga National Park and Pobitora Wildlife sanctuary.
Wild animals, including the famous one-horned rhinoceros of Kaziranga National Park, were forced to cross NH-37 and take shelter in the nearby Karbi hills.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, on Thursday, visited the flood affected Majuli, Nagaon, Morigaon, Jorhat, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts and took stock of the situation in these districts.
Minister for Water Resources Keshab Mahanta and Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Naba Kumar Doley also accompanied the Chief Minister.
