Vasundhara Raje must step down, Congress says Lalit Modi issue
New Delhi, June 25 (IBNS) A day after revelation of the purport affidavit that Vasundhara Raje had signed in favour of former IPL boss Lalit Modi the Congress on Thursday demanded resignation of the Rajasthan Chief Minister and questioned why Prime Minister Narendra Modi was keeping silence over the issue.
Hitting out at the BJP, Congress leaders Ajay Maken and Sachin Pilot said the ruling party "is in denial over wrongdoings" by its ministers and leaders and asked the party to make clear whether it sees Lalit Modi as a victim or a fugitive.
Modi is facing charges of indulging in corruption and money laundering during his stint as chief of the Indian Premier League.
"It is now the inescapable truth that the current Chief Minister of Rajasthan has signed the affidavit for Lalit Modi," they told a press conference.
"The BJP needs to face the reality that Vasundhara Raje broke the law. They must ask Vasundhara ji to step down immediately," they said.
"The biggest issue right now is how the PM is silent on the issues that are relevant right now. Why is he silent? Why is he not speaking about those who have broken the law?"
The two leaders pointed out that at no point has Raje said she has not signed the document or that is fake nor has anybody questioned the authenticity of the signature.
The affidavit presented to a UK court in 2011 describes as "a full frontal attack" that was "politically motivated," an investigation against Lalit Modi into a series of corruption cases during his tenure as chief of the Indian Premier League.
Ridiculing the BJP for its claim for maintaining transparency, Maken and Pilot said the ruling party is speaking in different voices, but there can not be two sets of standards, "one for your leaders and one for others."
"The BJP is in denial over wrongdoings by its ministers and leaders...The BJP should make it clear what it thinks is the way forward.." they said.
"The BJP is speaking in different voices. Does it see Lalit Modi as a victim or a fugitive?", they asked.
"The only question now is that how multiple issues are against the BJP leadership...This is not the leadership that 125 crore people in India voted for."
