US Open: Bopanna's total exit , Sania-Martina-Leander a step away from Championship
New York, Sept 10 (IBNS) A mixed day for Indian tennis faithful as Rohan Bopanna crashed out of 2015 US Open, losing both his Mens Doubles and Mixed Doubles matches but Sania Mirza and Leander Peas both booked final berths in their respective Womens Doubles and Mixed Doubles matches with common partner Martina Hingis, here on day 10.
Playing at Court 17, Bopanna and his Romanian partner, Florin Mergea, conceded their Men’s Doubles quarter final match to Englishman Dominic Inglot and Robert Lindstedt of Sweden 6(2)-7(7), 3-6.
In another encounter on the same court he lost his Mixed Doubles match to fellow countrymen Leander Peas and his partner Martina Hingis. The Chan-Bopanna Indo-Taipei pair lost the first set 2-6 but showed some improvement in the next though it was inadequate as they went down 5-7 to end all hopes of playing in the big finals.
Flavia Pennetta started off in fashion, edging past Petra Kvitova 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to reach the semis in the Women’s Singles category but failed to emulate her success in the following Doubles match alongside her fellow compatriot Sara Errani.
Pennetta-Errani lost their Doubles semifinal match to the top seeded pair of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis 4-6, 1-6. This was Martina’s first of the two wins of the day, catapulting her to the finals of the Women’s Doubles.
In the Women’s Singles category, Simona Halep 6-3, took early advantage in her quarterfinals match against former world number one Victoria Azarenka before losing the second set 4-6, only to win the decider 6-4 and the match in a tight finish, setting up a clash with Flavia Pennetta in the semifinals.
Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka both won their respective Men’s Singles match to set up an ‘all Swiss’ semifinal encounter.
Federer took on Richard Gasquet of France and floored him 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 to make a swift entry in the semis.
Stan Wawrinka put an end to Kevin Anderson’s heroics by beating him in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-0.
