Supreme Court to hear Cauvery water issue, prohibitory orders in parts of Karnataka
Bengaluru, Sept 27 (IBNS) : Bengaluru and the rest of the Cauvery basin of Karnataka have been placed under prohibitory orders as the contentious issue of sharing river water with Tamil Nadu will be heard in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, reports said.
Karnataka has expressed its inability to release Cauvery water, except for drinking purpose to the neighbouring Tamil Nadu, which wants a contempt proceeding against Karnataka for disobeying court order.
Karnataka has sought modification of the court's order, stating that it would not be able to release water till December.
As tension has been running high in Karnataka over the issue with violent protests taking place in different areas, prohibitory orders under section 144 Cr P C have been promulgated in Bengaluru and the Cauvery basi area.
When the court takes up the matter, it would want to know why its order was not implemented. It would also look into the resolution the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council uninamously adopted resolving to use Cauvery water only for drinking purposes.
