Bengal trends: BJP on course to form government
Kolkata : Signalling a potential tectonic shift in West Bengal politics, early trends in the Assembly election results indicate the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on course to form the government, potentially ending the 15-year rule of Mamata Banerjee.
According to early trends reported by local media, the BJP is leading in over 160 seats, while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) trails with around 115 seats.
The Congress is ahead in 5 seats, while the Left Front is leading in 2 constituencies.
In key battles, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari is leading in Nandigram.
In Bhabanipur, a tough contest is underway between Adhikari and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee.
Senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh is leading in Kharagpur, while Ratna Debnath, mother of the RG Kar victim, is ahead of her nearest rival in Panihati.
West Bengal has once again emerged as the centre of national political attention, with repolling conducted in Falta, Diamond Harbour and Magrahat Paschim following reports of electoral tension.
The elections witnessed an intense contest primarily between the ruling TMC and the BJP.
Polling was conducted in two phases on April 23 and April 29.
