SC rules Meiyappan, Kundra were involved in IPL betting
New Delhi, Jan 22 (IBNS): The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that exiled BCCI chief N Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan as well as Raj Kundra of Rajasthan Royals team were involved in illegal betting as it passed a verdict on the IPL spot fixing and betting scam of 2013.
"BCCI functions are public functions, amenable to judicial law," said the court which however absolved Srinivasan and said his actions at best can be called suspicious.
The apex court said Srinivasan is not guilty and gave him a clean chit.
Srinivasan was accused of taking no action against Meiyappan earlier. The court held that Meiyappan was indeed an official of Chennai Super Kings, a team owned by India Cements, a company where Srinivasan is managing director.
Srinivasan has been seeking a clean chit from the Supreme Court to contest the BCCI elections and win another term as president.
He had petitioned that he may be restored to his position as BCCI chief and be allowed to function.
Earlier, the Mudgal Committee, which submitted its report on IPL scam on Nov 17, had indicted Meiyappan and Rajasthan Royals franchise co-owner Raj Kundra of betting and confirmed their role in their teams but cleared Srinivasan of match fixing and scuttling the probe.
The probe report had charged Srinivasan with "covering up" Meiyappan's role.
