Political parties slam club for denying entry to dhoti-clad judge
Chennai, July 15 (IBNS): After a judge of Madras High Court wearing a 'dhoti' (traditional Indian garment) was reportedly denied entry in a club owing to its dress code, political parties reacted strongly against the move asking the state government to intervene into the matter.
Members of the Madras High Court Bar Association have now joined the protest against the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association Club (TNCA)'s move to deny entry to a Justice D Hariparanthaman for wearing a dhoti.
DMK chief M Karunanidhi said the government should intervene to remove any kind of dress code in public functions. He also said dhoti is a symbol of Tamil culture.
CPI Leader D Raja said, "People have the right to choose their dress. Of course, in Tamil Nadu, it is dhoti as the normal dress of every citizen. Whether he's Judge or ordinary building construction worker or anybody."
The protest even reached the Tamil Nadu state Assembly on Monday, following which he AIADMK government reportedly promised it will consult both Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and its legal department before taking action.
