Jayalalithaa to appear in public on Friday first time since acquittal
Chennai, May 19 (IBNS) For the first time since her acquittal in connection with the disproportionate assets case, AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa will appear in public on Friday in Chennai as she meets the party's lawmakers in what is believed to be a spadework for her return as chief minister of the state.
The former chief minister will first go to the city's Anna Salai to garland statues of famous political and social icons, including her party's founder, MG Ramachandran before holding a meeting with her party's 150 law-makers, reports said.
On May 11, the Karnataka high court absolved her of the charges of amassing wealth overruling the conviction of a trial court that had sentenced her to four years in prison in September last year.
The conviction forced the "amma" as she is fondly called by her admirers to quit as chief minister. After three weeks in prison, she was granted bail by the Supreme Court.
In a statement last week, Jayalalithaa compared her acquittal to a test that proves the purity of gold.
If Jayalalithaa again becomes chief minister replacing O Panneerselvam she will have to contest and win a seat in the state assembly within six months, as is required by the constitution.
