Jayalalithaa takes oath as member of Tamil Nadu Assembly
Chennai, Jul 4 (IBNS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa on Saturday took oath as the member of the State assembly after being elected from RK Nagar constituency in a by-election.
She had won the election by more than 1.5 lakh votes.
Reports said Jayalalithaa arrived at the chamber of Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal at 11 a.m., and handed over the certificate of election issued by the Returning Officer of the RK Nagar constituency to him and took the oath.
Senior Ministers including O Panneerselvam were present on the occasion.
The Chief Minister thus fulfilled the constitutional obligation of getting elected from an assembly constituency after she took oath as Chief Minister on May 23 when she was not a legislator.
She virtually made a resurrection in her political life after returning as the state's Chief Minister once again following a verdict by the Karnataka High Court on May 12 that acquitted her in the disproportionate assets case.
The High Court verdict set aside a trial court order of September 2014 sentencing them to four years in prison.
The trial court conviction forced Jayalalithaa to step down as CM and forfeited her membership of the assembly.
