Italy: Two die trying to rescue victims
Brindisi, Jul 19 (IBNS): Two persons, a Briton and an Italian died at an Italian beach while trying to rescue the former's daughter and father from a strong current, reports said.
The fatal incident took place at 10:00 am on Tuesday, at Bosco Verde beach, Ostuni, on the south-east coast near Brindisi.
The girl and her grandfather were playing in the sea when they were overcome by waves.
Seeing them struggle, the man along with a local rushed to rescue them but were eventually thrown off balance by another dash of strong currents and though they were rescued alive by rescuers, died shortly afterwards.
The girl and her grandfather however survived the onslaught.
Though the victim has not been identified officially, local media named him as Simon Alessandro Pearson, 48.
The other deceased has been identified as 49-year-old Martino Maggi.
In a statement the UK foreign office said that it was supporting the bereaved family.
