Indian fisherman shot dead : Sri Lanka Government assures investigation
Chennai, Mar 7 (IBNS) : Colombo has reportedly promised "full and thorough investigation" into the killing of a 22-year-old Indian fisherman by the Sri Lankan navy as the incident ignites anger in Tamil Nadu.
An NDTV report quoted Government sources as saying that India has raised the killing with Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and expressed its deep concern.
More than a thousand people gathered at the home of the fisherman, Bridgo, in Rameswaram on Tuesday morning, and his family has refused to accept his body without action by the Indian and Lankan governments.
Bridgo was fishing close to the Katchatheevu islet when Lankan naval personnel opened fire, the report quoted Fisheries Department official Kulanchinathan as saying.
Bridgo was shot in the neck and died instantly. Another fisherman, Sharon, was shot in his leg.
The Lankan personnel allegedly did not fire a warning shot before shooting at the fishermen.
Chief Minister K Palaniswami has condemned the killing.
