Hanumanthappa's last rites in his ancestral Karnataka village today
Hubli, Karnataka, Feb 12 (IBNS): While India mourned the death of their soldier Lance Naik Hanamanthappa, who was rescued alive from Siachen after remaining buried for six days under snow but succumbed later in a hospital in New Delhi, his final rites will be performed Friday in his village in Dhadwaad in Karnataka.
People in large number gathered in his village Detdor in Dhadwaad where his body is being brought from Hubli. His body was kept at the Stadium in Hubli for the people to pay their last respects.
His body was earlier yesterday flown to Karnataka from Delhi.
Hanamanthappa was pronounced dead in an army hospital in New Delhi on Thursday.
At around 11:45 am Thursday after being in coma ever since his rescue he died due to multiple organ failure.
The soldier's body draped in Tricolour was taken to the national capital's Brar Square, where wreaths were laid to honour him.
From Brar Square, Hanamanthappa's body was taken to the Palam technical area and flown to his home state, Karnataka.
He is survived by his wife, Mahadevi Ashok Bilebal, and a two-year-old daughter.
Hanamanthappa was recovered alive six days after he was buried under more than thirty feet of snow and ice after an avalanche stuck their post in the early hours of Feb 3 in Siachen.
His condition had deteriorated despite aggressive therapy and supportive care at the Army Research and Referral Hospital.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday condoled the demise of Lance Naik Hanumanthapp.
