Five killed in Thane building collapse, more feared trapped
Thane, Maharashtra, Jul 29 (IBNS) Five people were killed when a three-storey building collapsed in Maharashtra's Thane district on Tuesday night as efforts were going on to rescue the people feared to be trapped inside.
The building, 'Matru Krupa' located in Thakurli, collapsed around 10.40 pm when it was raining heavily reports said.
"The building was constructed in 1972. A few days ago, it was declared a dangerous building after a structural audit and the corporation issued eviction notices but the building was not vacated. Yesterday, parts of the building collapsed and today, it collapsed completely," media reports quoted Kalyani Patil, Mayor of Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation as saying.
The injured have been admitted to hospital.
A 50-member team from the National Disaster Response Force are engaged in rescue operation, being hampered by rain since Tuesday night.
