Congress goes past BJP in Rajasthan local body by-election
Jaipur, Dec 20 (IBNS): A day after fighting hard to retain Gujarat, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) received defeats by Congress as it won majority of seats in local body by-elections in Rajasthan.
Giving a jolt to Vasundhara Raje-led BJP government, Congress surged in the state by sweeping all four Zila parishad seats.
Congress won 16 out of 27 Panchayat samiti seats while BJP managed to get 10.
Out of 14 Municipal by-polls, both Congress and BJP fought neck-to-neck by winning seven seats each.
The poll result certainly gave a tone to the Congress party, which fought hard in Gujarat, and also a sense of worry for BJP as Rajasthan is heading to a number of by-elections and also the Assembly poll in 2018.
The state will have by-polls in two Lok Sabha constituencies-Ajmer and Alwar- and one Assembly seat in Mandalgarh in 2018 before the state election.
Congress' state President Sachin Pilot was quoted by The Hindu: "The results have depicted people's disenchantment with the BJP and a renewed faith in Congress."
