Bar council issues showcause notices to defence lawyers in Nirbhaya case
New Delhi, Mar 7 (IBNS) The Bar Council of India has issued showcause notices to two defence lawyers for their remarks in a documentary on the brutal gang-rape and murder of a woman in Delhi in 2012.
Their remarks have kicked up a massive controversy and evoked condemnation.
In its notice, the council, which met late last night, has given ML Sharma and AK Singh three weeks' time to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against them for their remarks.
Directed by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin, the documentary, titled "India's daughter," has been banned in India as it includes certain comments of one of the convicts who is on death row. However, BBC has aired the documentary in Britain.
Both the lawyers were also interviewed in the documentary where Sharma said, "there is no place for women in Indian culture." Both AK Singh and he made other explosives comments too.
"Once they file their reply to showcause notice, we will examine and if we find that an enquiry needs to be initiated, then after holding the enquiry, the bar council has the power to revoke licence," Manan Mishra, Chairman, Bar Council of India told NDTV.
The lawyers' comments prompted even fellow lawyers to demand cancellation of their licences.
