12 convicted,1 acquitted in 2006 Mumbai train blast case
Mumbai, Sept 11 (IBNS) A special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court has convicted 12 out of the 13 accused in the 2006 Mumbai suburban train blasts that killed nearly 200 people and injured more than 800.
One accused has been a acquitted in the case.
The verdict comes nine years after the serial blasts that took place in crowded suburban trains, Mumbai's lifeline, in 2006 during the evening peak hours.
Seven RDX bombs went off in a span of just 11 minutes in the first class coaches of Mumbai's suburban trains on July 11, 2006, killing 188 people and injuring 829. The bombs were kept in pressure cookers.
The blasts occurred between Khar Road-Santacruz, Bandra-Khar Road, Jogeshwari-Mahim Junction, Mira Road- Bhayander, Matunga- Mahim Junction and Borivali.
In a trial that lasted for eight years, the prosecution examined 192 witnesses, including eight Indian Police Service (IPS) and five Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers as well as 18 doctors.
The defence lawyers examined 51 witnesses and one person was called as a court witness.
Altogether 13 people were arrested and made accused in the case while 15 others are still absconding.
