Quota protests rock Andhra Pradesh, train bogies set on fire
Hyderabad, Feb 1 (IBNS): Violent protests hit East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh as demonstrators belonging to the Kapu community blocked highways, railway lines and and set fire on train bogies on Sunday.
The community is demanding reservation and Backward Classes status for them.
Thousands of demonstrators belonging to the community blocked the Chennai-Kolkata national highway.
Several people have been injured in the incident, media reports said.
According to reports, demonstrators reportedly set fire to a police station in Tuni and ransacked the Tuni railway station.
Additional police forces have rushed to the spot.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu tweeted: "Shocked and saddened by the incident at Tuni. We are closely monitoring the situation. Responsible people will be taken to justice."
