Over 20, including Indian, missing in China boat capsize
Nanjing, Jan 16 (IBNS) A boat sank in the river Yangtze in China's Jiangsu Province on Thursday with many feared killed as 20 people went missing. Reports said there was an Indian on the boat along with people from other nations, state media in China said.
According to Xinhua news agency, the rescuers have saved three passengers on board a tug boat that sank while testing water in Fubei Channel on the Yangtze River at about 3 p.m. Thursday.
Search is on for more missing persons.
The news agency said seven or eight foreigners including Singaporean, Indian and Japanese nationals, are believed to be among the missing when the tug boat with 24-25 people on aboard sank.
Rescuers said the rescue work is difficult "as the current is swift and the water is cold", reported Xinhua.
Zhang Lei, vice governor of Jiangsu, and Li Shixin, vice director of the National Maritime Bureau, are overseeing the on-site rescue work. Diplomatic staff have also arrived to help verify the foreign nationals on board the vessel, the agency said.
