Karnataka to observe a shutdown today, transport to run as usual
Bengaluru, Jun 12 (IBNS): Karnataka will respond to a bandh called by two pro-Kannada organisation and will observe a shutdown on Monday, reports said.
However, buses, metros, cans and autos will ply as usual.
As per reports, Bangaloreans will face a bit of a hassle with widespread traffic restrictions as Vice President Hamid Ansari and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi will be in the city for the re-launch of National Herald, an English-language daily supported by the Congress.
The 12-hour shutdown has been called to attract the central government's attention on the interstate Mahadayi river dispute and a solution to potable water problems in Chikkaballapur, Chitradurga, Devanagere and Kolar districts.
The bandh will also affect the cinema halls as most owners have decided against screening shows.
Most exams scheduled on Monday have been rescheduled for Tuesday, while Visvesvaraya Technological University has postponed its eighth-semester theory exams, stating that a date will be announced later.
Meanwhile, to prevent any form of disruptions, over 15,000 police have been deployed, with additional security at Metro stations, bus terminals and railway stations.
"We are not taking chances. All policemen in the city will be on duty. Apart from 15,000-plus police personnel, 78 platoons of Karnataka State Reserve Police and City Armed Reserve will be deployed on the streets. Senior police officers will monitor the situation," police commissioner Praveen Sood was quoted as saying by the Times of India.
