Ban on new diesel SUVs, luxury cars in Delhi till March 31
New Delhi, Dec 16 (IBNS) The Supreme Court on Wednesday banned the registration of diesel SUVs and cars above 2000cc in the national capital till March 31, reports said.
The apex court also ruled that commercial vehicles, which are not Delhi bound, will not be allowed to enter the national capital through entry points NH-8 and NH-1.
Last week, the National Green Tribunal had directed that no new diesel vehicles will be registered in Delhi. The tribunal had also said that the central and state governments must stop buying diesel cars in Delhi. These will be interim steps till the next date of hearing onJanuary 6, the green court had said.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court had agreed to ban the entry of trucks registered before 2005 in the national capital region and increase the green tax for trucks entering the national capital.
The court had also asked the state and central governments to come up with a solution to clean Delhi's air. "You formulate the norms, prescribe the regime. Why don't you do it? You take the credit for cleaning Delhi. Why do you let the opportunity go?" it said.
Last week, Chief Justice TS Thakur had called the pollution level in the national capital "embarrassing" and had asked for immediate solutions. "Delhi has earned a bad name that it is the most polluted city," he had said.
